Certified Organic Manufacturing

What does ‘Certified Organic’ mean? It sounds like an easy question…but it isn’t as straight forward as it may seem!

Before a product can be labeled as certified organic, an approved third party organization must approve the growing, handling, processing, labeling, transportation, and storage of the product and its ingredients to ensure that it complies with all relevant organic standards.

Organic certification goes well beyond simply using certified organic ingredients. Certified organic growers and manufacturers are annually inspected and audited in order to maintain their certifications. Detailed records must be kept regarding the methods and materials used in the growing and producing of the product. Certification ensures the products are handled in ways that protect their integrity; among other things, this means that no irradiation or GMO ingredients have been used.

Naturally Nova Scotia uses Quality Assurance International (QAI) as a third party organization to certify our products. QAI was founded in 1989 with headquarters in San Diego, California. Their certification programs ensure that growers’ and manufacturers’ products meet the regulatory standards applicable to their specific needs. QAI works within the National Organic Program (NOP) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

QAI’s major goals are to provide continuous assurance at every link in the organic production chain and to verify the organic integrity of each product destined to enter into market distribution. QAI is committed to the ongoing education of the organic community as well as consumers.

‘Certified organic’ is not just a catch phrase on a label, it’s a commitment by a company. Make the Real Organic Choice – look for the USDA logo on your supplements!

Naturally Nova Scotia adheres to the National Organic Program (NOP) through USDA (certified by QAI), as well as Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS), and European Union Organic Standard. We also follow ISO 9001:2000 standards and are GMP compliant. Visit our website for more information.
